There’s a big diet craze going on in Sweden at the moment called LCHF (low carb high fat) . It was impossible to miss, on the front page of most newspapers and a lot of friends were talking about it. It has been popular and highly debated for a while now. It’s basically cutting out most carbs and eating unlimited fat. This puts the body in a state of ketosis. Because the body doesn’t get any energy from carbohydrates it starts using fat stores as energy in order for the body to function and thats how you loose weight. It has been debated weather this is healthy or not. Personally I think not but without enough info to comment further. Apart from when I was a child my body naturally created ketons and this was an illness and not a desirable state for my body to be in that the doctors tried very hard to help me with so I can’t see why people want to do this to themselves.
Why I really dislike this diet (not that I like any diets apart from healthy eating and exercise) is that when LCHF cuts out carbs it’s not just sugar and white bread and pasta but also fruit and and most veg. And when they advocate eating a lot of fat, it’s not healthy fat like olive oil, avocado, nuts and so forth. It’s a diet full of meat, cream and butter……..Say what? Incomprehensible to me.
A lot of people are saying that they feel really good being on this diet and I can understand why, they cut out sugar, white bread and pasta which causes havoc with your blood sugar levels and makes you feel like a living yo-yo, one minute highly energetic and then a massive slump causing you to crave sugar to come up to that state of energy as soon as possible again. Yes bad carbs is a drug me thinks! But the effects of cutting out fruit and veg and stuffing yourself full of saturated fats its not something that you immediately feel the effects of but inside your body it’s slowly doing damage (again me thinks)
This was today’s bread less lunch.
A simplified version of Pad Thai. It wasn’t quiet the 1 minute level of preparation that a sandwich requires but it only took 10 min and the day after you can just heat up the second portion
Lunch for 2
1 bag stir fry vegetables
1 bag of chopped carrots and broccoli
2 tablespoons of reduced salt soya
A small tablespoon of fish sauce
1 teaspoon Coconut oil
A handful of coriander
Steam the carrots and broccoli for 5 min. In the meantime heat up the coconut oil in a wok. Scramble the eggs and put aside. Put all the vegetables in the wok and stir- fry until they are soft enough for your liking (appx 5 min) Add soya and fish sauce, after a minute add the scrambled eggs and stir for another minute. Serve in a bowl with some coriander and chopped chillies if you like it spicy. And (almost) hey presto, lunch is served!
